Mr. Benjamin Franklin Gainer, affectionately known as “Ben” of Cottondale, Fl departed this life on Friday, March 4, 2011 at Jackson Hospital. He was a member of Henshaw Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Gainer was born in Cottondale, Florida but spent most of his life in Ypsilantic, Michigan. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army Vietnam Conflict; upon completing tour of duty, he received an honorable discharge.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 11:00am at the Henshaw Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church with Rev. Dovie Lewis, Rev. Lenny Marshall, Rev. David Greene, Evangelist Gladys Inman, Bro. Ron Johnson and Rev. Tony O. Hannah, officiating.

Interment in the Bethlehem Cemetery.

Mr. Gainer lied in repose at the church from 10:00am until time of the service.

Mrs. Hayes was a native of Jackson County, Florida and a member of Bethel Star Missionary Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 11:00am at Bethel Star Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. George Williams, Pastor, Rev. William Harvey, Rev. Bernard Felton and Minister Maxie Swintons, officiating.

Interment in the Orange Hill Cemetery.

Annie Pearl Conrad Benton

Annie Pearl Conrad Benton, 89, of Tallahassee, died Sunday, February 27, 2011 at Margaret Dozier Hospice House, Big Bend Hospice. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert James Benton and by her parents, James Henry Conrad and Martha Clarkie Ferguson. Annie Pearl was also preceded in death by her 2 brothers, James Leslie Conrad, and Henry Willis Conrad and by her sister, Sallie Evelyn Conrad Williams.

Mrs. Benton was a native of Malone, Florida and moved to Tallahassee from Miami 30 years ago. She was a homemaker and an active member of Lake Jackson United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a great-nephew, Mike Williams; and great-nieces, Joy Patrick, Ann Powell, Barbara Taylor, Cassie Rylands and Dawn Williams. She leaves her loving neighbors, Linda and Richard Royster, Michelle and Lance Hart, Elle and Hayley Hart and Rick and Bridget Royster and family friends, Myrtice and Opal Poppell and Louise Coe. Also caring neighbors Nancy and Don Downey and Marecela and Enrique Yanez and family, as well as her loving church family.

A service was held for Annie Pearl on March 1, 2011 at the Lake Jackson United Methodist Church in Tallahassee. Interment followed at Roselawn Cemetery in Tallahassee. The Rev. Teresa McBain and the Rev. Kevin Hall officiated and a reception of family and friends was held just prior to the service time at the church.

Joseph Lee Cross

Joseph Lee Cross, age 76, of Marianna departed this life on March 4, 2011 at his residence. He was born in the state of Illinois in the year of our Lord November 17, 1934. He received his education from Illinois Public School Systems. At an early age he joined the U.S. Armed Forces, first the Navy and then the Air Force. He had an excellent affinity in making friends, of whom he counted dearly and loyally. Mr. Cross was an employee of Caterpillar for over 30 years and had been running his personal business for many years with great satisfaction and success. His companion for 5 years, Kaeretha, had a Christlike influence on him which led to his joining the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Joe, as he was affectionally called, was a man of many talents, with finesse of many types of machinery. He gives the credit to Caterpillar and the U. S. Armed Forces. His quest for gaining the knowhow and interest was due to his inquisitive mind.

He leaves behind his church family (Marianna SDA), Kaeretha his companion and wife, many neighborhood friends and business associates. Many thanks go to those who helped to lighten the burden to his wife.

Funeral services for Mr. Cross were held on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Westberg officiating.

Visitation was held on Monday, March 7, 2011 at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home.

Thomas Hilton Freeman, 67, of Marianna, died Friday, March 4, 2011 at Jackson Hospital.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, a self-employed business owner with a strong work ethic. Thomas was a devoted Christian and a member of Pilgrims Rest Assembly of God Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Neal and Myrtle Woods Freeman; four brothers, Charles, Bobby, Jerry and Earl Freeman

Survivors include his wife, Christine Freeman; two sons, Mark Hilton, Michael Wayne Freeman and wife, Mandy all of Marianna; two daughters, Sherri Lipford and husband, Jamie of Altha, Terri Williams of Marianna; one brother, Gordon Freeman of Marianna; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Monday, March 7, 2011 at Maddox Chapel with Rev. Ellis Vickery officiating. Burial followed in Vickery Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

Eugene Van Hall

Eugene Van Hall, 70, died Friday, March 4, 2011 in Marianna.

A native of Jacksonville, Mr. Hall had resided in Marianna for many years. He was a U. S. Army Veteran having served with the 1st. Airborne Division and was self employed in the air conditioning industry.

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Grace and Leroy Mears of Cypress; one son, Darren Vanier; two daughters, Melinda Vanier and Melody Mahoney; one step-brother, Alan Mears of Cypress; one step-sister, Glenda Sebastian of Greenwood; two grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services were Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at Cypress Cemetery with Mr. Paul Brock officiating with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

Leona Olive

Leona was born April 23, 1917, the daughter of Oscar and Ethel Olive, Sr. She finished school at Malone High School and then attended Bob Jones College of Cleveland, Tennessee. She then attended Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fl where she got her BS Degree and later got her Masters Degree at Florida State.

Every one knew her as a wonderful christian lady that loved her church. She taught school for forty years, mostly at Golson School, Sneads and Bonifay.

She was a lifetime member of the Bascom Methodist Church.

Leona is survived by a brother, Oscar Olive, Jr. and wife Jessie; one sister, Edith Carter and husband, Harold of Ocala and a host of nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her sisters, Eleanor Kemp, Dorothy Blackmon and Bernice Bradley.

Services were held at James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 6, 2011 with Rev. Bob Calvert (Bascom Methodist pastor) assisted by Rev. Bob Bennett. Burial followed at Bascom Methodist Church Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

A private family viewing was from 1 p.m. until service time.

Judson Ryals Mitchell

Judson Ryals Mitchell, 84, of Marianna went to be with the Lord, March 2, 2011, at his home.

He was born Aug. 11, 1926, in Dellwood, Fl. to Judson Edward and Myrtice Hart Mitchell. Judson attended Greenwood High School and graduated from Leon High School while enrolled in Electronic School in Tallahassee, Fl. He married Sara Frances Greer on June 30, 1949. He was self employed as the owner and operator of Mitchell’s TV and Radio Shop. Judson, known as “Ju-Ju”, was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Ju-Ju delighted in his two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was a “jack-of-all-trades” and could fix anything that was broken. He built from scratch the family beach house and remodeled his other vacation homes. He retired in 2005 because of health reasons. He loved to work in his garden and spend time at his beach, lake, and mountain homes. His favorite hobby was to fish and go to Hardees to see the “Hardee Boys” telling his “fish” stories.

Judson was preceded in death by his wife, Sara, in January of 2011; his son-in-law, Rodney Russ; his parents, Judson and Myrtice Mitchell; both his sister and brother-in-law, Guy and Mary Jo Moody; his sisters and brothers, Arthur Mitchell, Wallace Mitchell, Coy Mitchell, Bonnie Ruth Swanner, Mildred Barfield, and Ellen Hasty.

Ju-Ju is survived by his daughter, Sarieta Russ; granddaughter, Alanna Russ; grandson, Mitchell Russ; great-granddaughter, Maggie Russ-Baxley; a host of nieces and nephews; and special extended family, Kisha Basford, Glenn and Janet Young.

The family received friends at James and Sikes Maddox Chapel on Thursday, March 3, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The funeral service was Friday, March 4, at James and Sikes Maddox Chapel, Roland Rabon officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, James & Sikes Funeral Homes Maddox Chapel directing.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, or Covenant Hospice, 4215 Kelson Ave., Suite E. Marianna, Fl. 32446.

Lucy Gibson Nickles of Panama City, Florida, formerly of Marianna, Florida departed this life on February 26, 2011 at her residence.

Mrs. Nickles was a member of Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church and was employed by the Bay County School Board until her retirement.

Funeral Service were held Saturday March 5, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at McChapel African Methodist Episcopal Church with Rev. Mary Myrick, Pastor and Rev. Linda Ellis officiating.

Interment in the church cemetery.

Phillip “Curly” Edward Howard

Phillip “Curly” Edward Howard, age 66, of Marianna passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 23, 2011. He was a resident of Jackson County since 1965 after coming here from Athens, Tennessee. Mr. Howard was a retired dairy farmer and a used car salesman. He was a wonderful Daddy, Pa Paw and friend. Throughout his life he helped many people.

Mr. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Ruby Hill Howard and his Uncle Joe Hill.

Survivors include his loving wife, Launa Howard of Marianna, daughters, Suzette McCoy and husband, Tim and Misty Hanlon and husband, B.J. all of Marianna; sisters, Vickie Townsend of Athens, Tennessee and grandchildren, Harris Hanlon, Layton Hanlon, Tanner McCoy and Hannah Mc Coy all of Marianna.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 2 P.M. at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Willis Hagan officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Memory Gardens.

RICKY LAMAR KENT

Funeral services for Ricky Lamar Kent, age 56, of Eufaula were held Sunday, February 27, 2011 at 2 P.M. from the First Baptist Church in Eufaula. Dr. Ken Bush and Art Kimbrough will officiate and burial followed in the Clayton Cemetery with Rev. Bill Brown officiating and Kent Funeral Home of Eufaula directing. Mr. Kent died suddenly Wednesday, Feb. 23 after an apparent heart attack resulted in an auto accident.

Born September 14, 1954 in Panama City, Fl. Ricky was the son of the late Versie E. and Georgia Blanche Owens Kent. He had lived in Barbour County since 1979 coming from Montgomery, Al. Ricky was a member of First Baptist Church of Eufaula, a licensed Alabama Funeral Director and Embalmer, he was a past president of the Clayton Rotary Club, past president of the Barbour County Heart Association, was a member of the Royal Whiteheart Masonic Lodge in Clayton and a 1972 graduate of Rutherford High School in Panama City, Fl. He was a co-owner of Kent Funeral Home in Clayton and Eufaula, a co-owner of Heritage Funeral Home in Panama City, Fl., and co-owner of Kent Thornton Funeral Home in Dothan. Ricky was a shareholder of Kent Care, which owns funeral homes in Tennessee, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi. Ricky was a loving husband, father and friend. He enjoyed music and played for many parties, dances, weddings, receptions and special occasions. He enjoyed writing poetry and cooking.

Survivors include his wife, Hope Kent, Eufaula; a son, Erick (Corrie Dukes) Kent, Auburn; three daughters, Michelle K. (Scott) Porter, Birmingham, Heather K. (Robert) McGowan, Eufaula and Dani Kent, Eufaula; a brother, Charles (Julie) Kent, Marianna, Fl.; three sisters, Jean (Joe) Stone, Millbrook, Ann (Tony) McCartha, Coosada, and Margie (Tommy) Lane, Panama City, Fl.; and 7 grandchildren, Drew McGowan, Anna Kathryn Martin, Samantha Martin, Noah Porter, Jacob Kent, Luke McGowan, and Caleb Kent.

Pallbearers were Freddy Holland, Jimmy Pitts, Charles Kent Jr., Justin Kent, David Lane, Mark Presnell, Clark Presnell and Kenny Stiles.

John Henry “Hank” Taylor

John Henry “Hank” Taylor, 69, of Seagrove, NC passed away Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011 in Sneedville, Tenn.

He was born October 24, 1941 in Chattahoochee, Fl. to Jeff and Evelyn Taylor. He married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Addison in 1958. After graduating from FSU they moved to Dothan, Al., where he worked with Boy’s Scouts of America and later owned and operated Deep South Auction Co. After moving to Seagrove, NC in 1982 he continued to work in the auction business until his sudden passing. He was a member at Hulda Baptist Church, Asheboro, NC.

Preceding him in death were his loving parents Jeff and Evelyn Taylor and special son, Kent Addison Taylor.

Mr. Taylor is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Sharon; his children, John Henry Taylor, Jr. and wife Lisa, Vitano Lynn Willis and husband Billy, Lisa Lea Moon and husband Dale; one sister, Abbie Jo Taylor Olvera and husband Felix; Sister-in-laws, Betty Addison and Nettie Adkinson Addison. 10 Grandchildren and 1 special great-grandchild.

Funeral services were Friday, February 25, 2011 at Grace Community Baptist Church, 2059 Booster Club Road near Chattahoochee, Fl. with Revs. Bill McCammon & Ivan Holbert officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

Alpha Kate Roberts

Mrs. Alpha Kate Roberts, of Saint Petersburg, Florida, formerly of Graceville, FL entered gently and peacefully into the presence of the LORD Almighty on Wednesday, February 23, 2010 at the Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Saint Petersburg, Florida. “To live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21) She was 84.

Kate was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene Sr. and Caroline West, and five siblings: Naomi West, Dixie Clark, Eugene West, Jr., Samuel West and Hattie Waters.

She will be forever loved and remembered by those left to cherish her memories her children: Carolyn Broxton and husband Frederick of Riverview, Florida, Cheryl Hill, St. Petersburg, FL, Alphanese Roberts, Clearwater, FL, Charlie Roberts, Brandon, FL, Gregory Roberts and wife Barbara, Valrico, FL and Nathaniel Roberts of St. Petersburg, FL; sister and brother: Daisy Lee Barkley of Saint Petersburg, FL and Frank Edward West of Dothan, AL; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a multitude of sorrowing nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, church family and friends.

Family received friends Friday, March 4th, from 6-7 PM, at the M. Sue and Rodney D. Pittman Memorial Chapel, 5441 Cooper Street, Graceville, FL.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 5th, at 11:00 AM, at the New Easter Missionary Baptist Church, 977 Hope Avenue, Graceville, FL with the Reverend Price Wilson, pastor/eulogist.

She was laid to rest in the Graceville Community Cemetery under the directions of Christian Memorial Chapel of Graceville, FL.

Donald O. Spence, 65, of Cottondale died Thursday, February 17, 2011, in Bay Medical Center.

A native of Elkton, Maryland, Mr. Spence was a retired US. Air Force veteran, a former corrections officer and a volunteer for Guardian AdLitem. A former resident of Bay County, he had resided n Jackson County for the past 11 years and attended Cottondale Assembly of God Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Owen and Kathryn Allen Spence.

Survivors include his wife, Jill Spence of Cottondale; four daughters, Elisa Ricketts and husband Chris of Ohio, Donna Bagley of Virginia, Cynthia Spence of GA., Deanna Sword and husband J. Dallas of Panama City; one brother, Danny Spence and wife Linda of Virginia; one sister, Kathy Graham and husband David of Virginia; seven grandchildren six great grandchildren.

Service of remembrance will be at 3 pm Sunday, February 20, 2011 at Cottondale Assembly of God Church with John Sword, Jr. officiating. Memorization will be by cremation with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 pm till funeral time at Cottondale Assembly of God Church.

Yvonne P. Poole, 79, of Marianna went to be with the Lord, Monday, February 14, 2011 at Flowers Hospital in Dothan, Alabama.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Baptist Church for 30 years.

Survivors include her husband, Brannon Poole of Marianna; two sons, Gary Brannon Poole and wife, Karen of Marianna, Stanley Poole of Chipley; four grandchildren, Karey Gautier of Bristol, Geoffrey Poole of Marianna, Jennifer Poole of Navarre, Alex Poole of Tallahassee; and two great grandchildren.

Howard H. “Tommy” Thompson, 86, of Marianna died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011 at his residence.

He was born in Lake City, served in the U S Army, veteran of WW ll, having served in Iceland and Greenland. Tommy was in the American Legion serving as a post commander and as the northern area commander and a member of the color guard. He retired as an electronic technician with Naval Air Station in Jacksonville. Mr. Thompson then moved to Marianna where he has lived for the past 35 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents Rev. Henry Howard and Rosa Lee Drawdy Thompson; two sisters, Florette LeBlanc and Frances Thornton.

Survivors include his wife Syble Pittman Thompson of Marianna; one daughter, Elizabeth Jordan and husband Robert of San Angelo, TX; one step son, Jim Fulford and wife Wendy of Boise Idaho; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb 12, 2011 at Greenwood Baptist Church with Rev. Gino Mayo officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Homes Maddox Chapel directing.

The family received friends one hour prior to funeral, Saturday at the church.

Bruce Wooten Monroe, 62, died at his home in Grand Ridge on February 8. A 21 year resident of Marianna, he was born in San Diego, CA and spent his childhood years in Jacksonville, FL. Bruce was initially a plumber in Jacksonville and then worked as a machinist in Chicago before settling in Marianna where his mother, Margaret Page and stepfather, Carl Page, resided. He worked as a machinist in Marianna at Chipola Airtronics and Unimac.

Mr. Monroe was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Page and father Buster Monroe (Lt. Comm, USN, Ret.), sister Marsha Monroe and stepson Eric Adams. His survivors include his three children, Bruce Monroe, Jr., Carl Monroe, Michelle Monroe, brothers, James Monroe, Lance Webb, sisters Mary Irby and Melodeee Chapman as well as six grandchildren and 19 nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service was at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011 at Maddox Chapel with Jack Howell officiating.

Bruce Monroe was a lifelong fan of Elvis Presley and NASCAR Racing and enjoyed traveling.

Mr. William Bellamy Jr. of Marianna, Florida entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 20th at Jackson Hospital. He was 72 years old.

A native of Jackson County, he was of the Baptist faith and a member of Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, past President of the Senior Choir #2 and a member of the Male Chorus.

He retired from LeHigh Furniture and Ryder after many years of service as a truck driver. He later worked for J Tran before becoming disabled.

Rev. Joel A. White, age 90, of Cottondale, FL passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at his home.

Rev. White was born in Holmes County and moved to Jackson County in 1973 from Crestview, FL. He served many churches in the Northwest Florida area as pastor and had retired from Alford Assembly of God as the associate pastor. His love for the Lord shined through him as he did what he loved which included years of ministry, singing and working for the Assembly of God Campground in maintenance. Rev. White served his country during WWII as a member of the United States Army, loved his family dearly and will be truly missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Mary Barton White, his wife of 59 years, Flarrie White, one brother; and three sisters.

Rev. White is survived by his wife of nine years, Winnie White of Cottondale, his son; Rev. Larry White and wife Jean of Cottondale, his step-son; Alan Downs and wife Elizabeth of Bonnieville, Kentucky, his daughter; Judy Sanford and husband Rev. James Thomas Morrissey, 81, of Marianna died Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan.

A native of White Plains, NY, Mr. Morrissey was a former resident of Ohio and Kentucky prior to moving to Jackson County in 2009. He was a US Army veteran, a former employee of Batesville Casket Company as a design engineer and retired as a corrections officer with the State of Kentucky.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Donna Morrissey; his parents, Archibald Leo and Edna McKinnley Morrissey.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Scott Morrison; two grandsons, James Scott and Jeremy Barrett Morrison all of Marianna.

He worked for various business and private clients before becoming disabled. He loved hunting wild game, fishing, and cooking out on the grill.

Mrs. Doris C. Rhodes, age 90, passed away on Thursday evening, January 27, 2011, at the Amos G. Rhodes Home at Wesley Woods in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mrs. Rhodes was born on October 22, 1920 in the Big Creek Community in Houston County, Alabama, to Clarence E. and Marzett Tindell Culbreth. She graduated from Rehobeth High School in 1938, completed secretarial training at the National Business School, and worked briefly for the Rationing Bard in Washington D.C. during World War II. Mrs. Adams later served as payroll clerk at the Dothan Hosiery Mill before marrying Cullen Rhodes in 1951. She served in Graceville clinic of the Jackson County Health Department for a number of years before her retirement.

Mrs. Rhodes was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Cullen Rhodes; her parents; three brothers, Clarence Edwin, Donald Ray and John Monroe Culbreth; her sister, Martha Frances Tyson. She is survived by her sister, Lenora McCall of Cottonwood, Alabama; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Kelly Culbreth of Dothan, Alabama and Carolyn Beall Culbreth of Graceville, Florida; three sons, Joseph C. Mr. Drown was born in Morocco, Africa, on August 28, 1956 and was retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Master Sergeant. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing, playing golf, bowling, playing softball, racquet ball and loved telling jokes.

Mr. Drown was preceded in death by his parents; Robert Willis Drown, Sr. and Chellie O’Neal Drown.

He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Linda M. Drown of Marianna, two sons; Jesse Cormier–Drown of New Jersey and Robert W. Drown, III of Marianna, one daughter; Leslie Ann Drown of Marianna, five sisters; Gloria Davis of Tulsa, OK, Donna Regiel of Rochester, NH, Bridget Wallace Cox of Ocean Springs, MS, Debra Spurlock of Marianna and Lisa Neff of Marianna, two grandchildren; Ashley M. Veal–Cormier and Brett E. Johnson–Drown.

Sharon was of the Baptist faith and was a LPN at Jackson Hospital. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who spent her leisure time with her family and enjoyed shopping.

Bruce Andrew Williams, age 59, of Cottondale passed away on Wednesday, January 26, 2011. He was of the Catholic faith and was the assistant manager of Po’ Folks Restaurant. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing. Mr. Williams served as past mayor of Cottondale and served his country in the United States Navy.

Mr. Green was born on November 4, 1946, in Marion, OH to the late Alfred Earl Green and Mary Elizabeth Williams. Mr. Green loved to serve and worship the Lord and was a member of the New Life Family Church where he gave his life to Jesus and was baptized. He enjoyed playing the bass guitar and had played fourteen years at his church. He also enjoyed fishing, reading, spending time with his granddaughters; and watching football with his sons.

He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Letitia Green of Andalusia, two sons; Jason Green and wife Janet of Marianna and Casey Green and wife April of Ft. Lauderdale, three grandchildren; Jesica and Jacee of Marianna and Oliver of Ft. Peggy Sue Oswalt, a resident of Graceville, was born in Starkville, MS on April 19, 1948. She died on, Feb. 1, 2011. Attending public Schools in her hometown, she later pursued higher education at Mobile College in Mobile, AL (now the University of Mobile). A member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she spent most of her life in Bay Minette, Robertsdale and Gulf Shores, AL. She was a member of Miflin Baptist Church in Foley, AL for many years, where she enjoyed helping with the church library.

Preceded in death by her mother, Clarice Johnston Oswalt and her father, Valter Hayes Oswalt, and her sister-in-law, Shelvie Hornsby Oswalt.

She is survived by her sister Rita Oswalt of Gulf Shores, AL; brother Jerry Oswalt and wife Grace of Graceville, FL; niece Deborah Jones and her husband Brent, their daughters Lauren, Ashleigh and Brittany all of Bonifay, FL; nephew David Oswalt and wife Stephanie, their daughter Sophia all of Dothan, AL.

Betty J. Birch, 78, of Marianna died Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at Jackson Hospital in Marianna.

Mrs. Birch was born in Graceville, Florida. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and studying different languages. She was a member of The First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, North Carolina. She had the opportunity to live and work in many places in the United States and Europe while her husband served in the US Air Force. She graduated from Florida State University with a graduate degree in Medical Library/Special Libraries. She served in the Civil Service as a medical librarian.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Doug and Verna Bruner.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, James J. Birch, one sister, Vernell Bruner Holley of Marianna; one sister-in-law, Ruby M. Christmas of Pensacola; two nieces, Susan Holley Kunde of Marianna, Carolyn Lovoy of Gulf Breeze; two nephews, Randy Holley of Marianna and Gerald Christmas of Plano, TX.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 29, in the Chapel of the Pines Mausoleum at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Marianna with Connie Farnell officiating. Sidney Mordes

Sidney Mordes, age 90, of Marianna, passed away on January 25, 2011. He was born on July 13, 1920 in Baltimore Maryland, the son of Sarah Greenberg and Max Mordes. He graduated High School from Baltimore City College in 1937 and joined the U.S. Maritime Service, the Merchant Marines, immediately after graduation. He rose from Ordinary Seaman to Master Mariner after attending the U.S. Coast Guard Officers’ School at New London, Connecticut and served as an officer in the Merchant Marine from 1942 to 1948. He served as quartermaster on the tanker Gulf America in April 1942 when the ship was torpedoed two miles off the coast of Jacksonville by German submarines. In 1947, the War Shipping Administration awarded him the Meritorious Service Medal for his courage and skill in rescuing crewmembers of the British Mine Sweeper, HMS Hebe, sunk at Bari, Italy in November of 1943, while he was serving on the SS Grace Abbott. Twenty Two ships were lost in this attack by the Axis powers. He was an active member of the National Maritime Union.

After ending his service in the Merchant Marine, he owned and operated Park Grocery located on Whitlock Street in Baltimore. He moved to Florida in 1954 where he held various jobs. He enrolled in the University of Miami while he continued working and received his B.A. in 1958, after only two and a half years of study. He received a Master of Science degree from Florida State University in 1959, and a Master of Guidance and Counseling from Florida A & M in 1989. He was an instructor of social sciences, sociology and geography from 1959 to 1983 at Chipola Junior College. He also taught at Apalachicola Correctional Institute, was an adjunct professor of sociology at Florida A&M University and was a substitute teacher in Leon and Martin Counties. He was a candidate for superintendent of schools in Jackson County. He cared deeply for his students encouraging them and maintaining an interest in their growth and lives. Because of him, many students were inspired and their thoughts broadened. He was strongly committed to the principles of justice, equality and civil rights for all peoples. On these issues and many others, he was unafraid to voice his opinion. He touched, influenced and informed many lives. As a youth he witnessed his own family struggle with the problems of poverty and discrimination, and he never lost compassion for the needy, the poor and the disenfranchised.

He is survived by two brothers Herman and Irvin Mordes of South Florida, a sister, Ruth Sherry of Bowie, Maryland his wife, Patricia Ann Hinson Mordes of Grand Ridge, Florida, his children Lillian Beth Mordes Abrams (Steve) of Madison, Wisconsin, Dr. David Mordes (Marilyn) of Stuart Florida, Gabriel Jon Mordes of Grand Ridge Florida, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Sara Oppenheimer Mordes, son Daniel Benjamin Mordes, and brother Sylvan Mordes.

His family would like to thank the Courtyard at the Millpond for their kindness and care.

His courage and dedication to high principles were an inspiration to all whose lives he touched.

Sister Ora Mae Peterson passed away Monday, January 24, 2011 at Marianna Health and Rehabilitation Center. Sister Peterson was born November 20, 1927 near Cottondale, Florida, the second child of the late Ishmel and the late Coreatha Benjamin Spires.

She and her sister, the late Otha Mae Spires Dickens, grew up and attended church and/or school in the communities of Saint John Missionary Baptist Church, Mount Ararat AME Church and Bethlehem AME Church. Sister Peterson later joined Friendship Missionary Baptist Church where she was a faithful member for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Sunday Morning Band, the Order of the Easter Star and the Home Mission Society. Sister Peterson and her husband, the late Bryant Peterson, founded the Jackson County Community Helper’s Club to serve the people of the community.

Sister Peterson leaves to cherish her memories; four children: Barbara Thompson Johnson, Marianna, FL; Charles Thompson (Diane), Bascom, FL; Sharron Stradford (Frank), Fayetteville, GA; and Calvin Dickens (Fanetta), Houston TX; fifteen grandchildren including Sheryl Johnson McGriff, Detroit, MI and Geryl De’Ron Johnson, Williamsburg, VA whom sheelped to raise; twenty-four great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, sister Dora Spires Russ, Marianna, FL; brother Marion Spires (Diane), Cottondale, FL; and eight stepchildren: Callie Dickens Wooden, Marianna, FL; Lillie Dickens Wooden (Sam), Chicago, IL; Willie Dickens, Chicago, IL; Robert Lee Dickens(Erika), Folson, CA; Charlie Peterson, Tampa, FL; Della Peterson Thompson, Tampa, FL; Pinky Peterson Langston, Tampa, FL; and Susie Williams, Tampa, FL; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and friends.

Mrs. Johnson was born on September 23, 1915, the daughter of James Baston and Florence Bell Baston in Washington County, Florida.

Anna Ruth McCoy Price, age 82, of Graceville, Florida, passed away on Friday, January 21, 2011, at the Signature Health and Rehabilitation Center in Graceville following an extended illness.

Mrs. Price was born on December 9, 1928, the daughter of Floyd and Lora McCoy, in Vanceberg, Kentucky. She volunteered everywhere she was able, at the Campbellton-Graceville Hospital, with the American Cancer Society, and was keeper of the nursery at the Damascus Baptist Church for many years, where she was fondly known as “Granny Annie”. Mrs. Price was a member of her Sunday school class, was a member of the social committee, and actively participated in all church activities as she was able.

Mrs. Price was preceded in death by three brothers, Elmer, Oliver, and Edward all of Portmouth, Ohio; two sisters, Lucille Williams of Apple Valley, California, and Polly Denning of Payne, Ohio; and her parents, Floyd and Lora McCoy. She is survived by her loving and beloved husband, Irby Price of Graceville, Florida; her son, Larry Ray Price of Tulare, California and wife Linda; two grandchildren, Kevin Price and wife Sheri of Tulare, California and Kimberly O’Neal of Visalia, California and husband Jeff; four great-grandchildren, Hannah and Karlee Price of Tulare, California and Nicholas and Natalie O’Neal of Visalia, California; her sister, Emma Gray of Lancaster, Ohio; her sisters-in-law, Betty Register of Graceville and Betty Price of Graceville; her brother-in-law Don Price of Graceville and wife Jackie; a very special niece, Sharon Burke of Payne, Ohio and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mr. William Bellamy Jr. of Marianna, Florida entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 20th at Jackson Hospital. He was 72 years old.

He retired from LeHigh Furniture and Ryder after many years of service as a truck driver. He later worked for J Tran before becoming disabled.

Lillian retired from Bay District Schools after 26 years of service as a paraprofessional working with students with special needs.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Jean Phillips and Patsy Forrest and loving son-in-law, Bob Forrest. She is also survived by three beautiful granddaughters, Barbara Monachelli, Mary Elen Forrest and Asia Riley and one great-grandson, Michael Monachelli. She is also survived by one sister, Myrtle McNitt and one brother, Ralph Hartzog, many loving nieces and nephews and a host of loving cousins.

Funeral service was held 2 PM., Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of Graceville with Rev. Tim Folds, Dr. Wiley Richards and Prof. Joe Wood officiating. Burial followed in Marvin Chapel Cemetery with James & Lipford Funeral Home directing. Ms. Bea was born in Meridian, MS. A graduate of New Orleans Seminary, Ms. Bea was a devoted wife to the late Dr. Lewis Arthur Curtis. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Graceville.

Preceded in death by her husband, grandson Daniel Eric Watford, five sisters and two brothers.

Survived by her beloved children Cathryn & Jimmy Register, Carolyn & Danny Watford, Robin & Reggie Brookins; thirteen grandchildren, twenty seven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Lloyd Flemming Roach, 59, of Marianna died Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Chipola Nursing Pavilion.

A native of Conway, South Carolina, Mr. Roach had resided in Marianna for the past 12 years. He was a retired painter by trade, of the Baptist faith and was a US Marine veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Ruth Smith Roach.

Survivors include his daughter, Tiffany Roach and grand daughter, Leigha Elaine Roach both of Myrtle Beach SC; three brothers, Charles R. Roach and wife Edna of Franklin, KY, Lindsay Roach and wife Nell of Grand Ridge and Ronnie Roach and wife Shirley of Mebane, NC.

Vernon Howard Hill, 76, of Greenwood died Sunday, January 23, 2011 in Jackson Hospital.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, having served in the U S Army. He was of the Pentecostal faith.

Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry Hill and Cora Lee Hill.

Survivors include his wife, Mozell Hussey Hill; son, Howard Hill; two daughters, Barbara Sewell and husband, Joel, Jeri Lynn Klinert and husband, John; one brother, Danny Hill and wife, Linda; four sisters, Ada Lawson and husband, Larry, Marie Smith, Annie Pitman and Magalene “Maggie” Neel; three grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jason Sewell; Nicholas Klinert; several nieces and nephews.

Craig Cameron Loving, 58 entered his final journey January 23, 2011.

Mr. Loving was born in White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia and grew up in Orlando where he attended Robert E. Lee Junior High and Edgewater High School.

Craig’s sense of humor gave his family, friends, and love ones many entertaining moments with his quick come backs.

Beryl Ray Mihlfeld, 75, of Grand Ridge, died Monday, January 24, 2011 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center.

He was born in Arcadia, Florida, served in the U S Air Force as an Airman First Class. He pastored churches for more than 30 years, most recently at New Beginnings Worship Center in Grand Ridge for the past 14 years.

He was preceded in death by his former wife of 37 years, , Betty Mihlfeld in 2001.

Survivors include his wife, Luvirn Mihlfeld of Grand Ridge; son, Kevin Mihlfeld and wife, Daphne of Fredericksburg, VA.; step-son, Eugene Stewart of Hawthorne, FL.; four daughters, Sheri Odum and husband, Tim of Cario, GA., Denise White of Tallahassee, Kimberly Walsh and husband, Sean of Fredricksburg, VA., Teresa Johnson and husband, Don of Grand Ridge, FL.; two sisters, Bessie Carter of Winder, Ga., Gladys South of Indianapolis, IN.; 12 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren.

William “Bill” LaDon Livingston, 36, of Marianna, died Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at his residence. Bill was born in Tallahassee, but had resided in Marianna, and worked as a Paramedic/E.M.T./Fire fighter for more than 15 years. He was a member of Salem Free Will Baptist Church in Steel City.

He loved hunting and fishing and watching Austin play baseball, and watching Lillie dance. He also loved fire fighting and being a paramedic until his illness in 2006.

He was a loving and devoted father to his children, who were the love of his life. He was also a loving and devoted son to his parents, always telling them how much he loved and appreciated them for always loving him and taking care of him.

He always wanted to help his fellow man and was a true friend to the many he has left behind. He also loved his Lord, and also loved the reading and studying of his Bible.

He is survived by two sons; Christopher Livingston, of Chipley, and Austin Livingston, of Marianna; one daughter, Lillie Livingston, of Marianna; his father and mother, Don and Jean Livingston, both of Marianna; one sister, Donna Tharp and husband, Rick, of Ozark, Al.; one nephew, Kessler Tharp; three nieces, Paxton, Landry, and Milan Tharp, all of Ozark.

Funeral services were at 2 pm. Friday, January 21, 2011, at the Salem Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor Donnie Hussey officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery with James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

Wayne Grimsley, 69, of Marianna, formally of the Dellwood Community, died Wednesday, January, 19, 2011, at Jackson Hospital in Marianna.

Wayne was retired from the Florida Department of Transportation, Marianna office, as a supervisor after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Dellwood Baptist Church for over 20 years, but had attended Grace United Methodist Church for the last eight years. He enjoyed working, loved his antique cars and his tractor, and loved tending to his garden.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Addis and Opal Messer Grimsley; his brother, James Grimsley; his son, Daniel Allen Grimsley.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Carolyn Grimsley of Marianna; one son, Tim Grimsley and wife, Mylinda of Altha; one daughter, Becky Strickland of Marianna; one sister, Betty Jane Sessions, of Tallahassee; he also has four grandchildren surviving.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Grace United Methodist Church in Marianna with Revs. Jim Harbert and Johnny Hamilton will be officiating. Burial followed in Dellwood Baptist Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

Mr. Andrew Speights of Atlantic City, New Jersey and formerly of Marianna, Florida entered into eternal rest on Friday, January 7th in the AtlantiCare Medical Center in Altantic City. He was 72 years old.

A native of Jackson County, he attended the Jackson County Training School and graduated in 1957. Hunk and Andy, as he was affectionately called was a former member of New Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church.

He worked for many years at United Exposition Service Co. before retiring. He also worked as a cab driver.

Andy leaves a lifetime of love and precious memories to his former wife, Joan Speights of Atlantic City, New Jersey; two daughters, Ann D. Speights of Atlantic City, New Jersey and Annette Speights-Hassan of Somers Point, New Jersey; two brothers, Raymond Speights of Marianna, Florida and Roshell Spears and wife Vivian of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; four sisters, Betty Ann White and husband Jerome, Shirley Bronson and husband Sonnie both of Marianna, Florida, Susie Franklin and husband Alfonso of Randallstown, Maryland and Patricia Speights of Jacksonville, Florida; one grandson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Clinton E. Olive was born in Bascom. Fl., April 5, 1938. Died, January 9, 2011. Clint served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force and lived most of his adult life in Tallahassee, Fl. He retired after 31 years of employment with NCR, followed by 10 years with Capital City Bank in Tallahassee. He was an ordained deacon and taught Sunday School for 30 years. Clint was a member of Thomasville Road Baptist Church, where he sang in the worship choir for many years, was a member of the New Beginnings S.S. Class and the Young At Heart Choir.

His parents Henry and Eula Olive preceded him in death as did a sister, Frances. Clint is survived by his wife, Margaret, Tallahassee, Fl.; brothers, Hilton and wife Alice J., Birmingham, Ala; Johnny and wife Kathleen; Charles and wife Barbara, both Dothan, Ala.; sister Sarah Fitch and husband Frank, Gordan, Ala. A native of New Orleans, Mrs. McFarlane was a former resident of Fairhope, AL and had resided in Jackson County for the Past two years. She was a retired office manager in the insurance industry.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gordon McFarlane, Jr.; her parents, Joseph L. and Mary E. St. John Pic.

She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Fred and Diedre McFarlane of Marianna; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

The fascinating life of Tom L. Parnell began on January 5, 1936 in Vinita, Oklahoma; born to Willie “Bill” and Maggie Parnell. After completing high school in 1953, Tom attended NEO A&M where he earned a business degree. He served as the President of Oklahoma American Medical Technologists, worked as a medical lab technologist at a five-doctor clinic, taught junior high school, led praise and worship 20 years, was an ordained elder and licensed minister, and has been in business for himself since 1975.

In 1958, he married the love of his life, Mrs. Sue Parnell with whom he has enjoyed 52 dedicated years, raising three sons and most recently serving on the leadership team for The Bridge, Marianna where Mr. Tom was loved and adored. His cheerful disposition and encouraging words have a way of making everyone feel like they alone are his favorite person. His unwavering faith in God and knowledge of scripture leaves a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to call him friend.

As Mr. Parnell’s transition takes him to his new home in heaven, his family and friends are honored to celebrate his life and the positive impact he has had on those around him. Preceded in death by parents Bill and Maggie Parnell, his sister Leota Fair and brother Willie Parnell. He is survived by many friends and loved ones including his beloved wife Mrs. Sue Parnell and their sons Jeff, Michael and Mark Parnell, Mark’s wife Robyn Parnell, and his brother Bud Parnell and wife Jackie of Centereach, New York. Tom also has 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He has 4 nieces and 3 nephews.

Mr. McRay (Makcy) Kirkland Thompson, age 70 of Chattahoochee, Florida, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2011, at Marianna Health and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness. Macky was born on February 16, 1940 in Pittsboro, North Carolina to M.C. and Carmi Belle Thompson.

Macky retired in 2002, after 42 years of dedicated service at the Florida State Hospital where he was a Unit Director. He loved his job and the friendships he developed over the years with his coworkers and employees. Hunting and fishing were just a few of his hobbies, in addition to being an avid Gator fan. Macky was a member of the Masonic Lodge G21 and the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

He is survived by the love of his life of 38 years, Elizabeth Dudley Thompson; two daughters, Kimberly (John) Riggs and Karen (Carl) Shealy both of Lake Butler, Florida; a sister, Gladys (Ralph) Johnson of Chipley, Florida; and sister-in-law Brenda (Eddie) Rabon if Sneads, Florida; Bonita Cook of Chattahoochee, Florida and Audrey Ryals of Chattahoochee, Florida. Clyde Bailey, 73 of Graceville passed away Monday, January 10, 2011.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m., Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Corinth Baptist Church with Rev. Earl Hendrix officiating. Burial followed in church cemetery with James & Lipford Funeral Home in Graceville directing. Family received friends at the funeral home Wednesday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Mr. Clyde was born in Calhoun County, Florida on January 28, 1937 to the late Samuel Lee and Bessie Lee Lauramore Bailey. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday School teacher and VBS director. Mr. Clyde, beloved by all, has worked with Piggly Wiggly for many years. He owned and operated Felters Seafood Restaurant for several years. Mr. Clyde will always be remembered for his way of winning a childs heart, giving them a piece of gum, holding them while their parent shopped and supporting not only his grandchildren in their extra curricular activities, but all the children in the community. Most of all, his passion was teaching and reaching out to young hearts about the love of Jesus.

Preceded in death by his wife Syble, granddaughter Maggie Danielle Wilkins, two brothers Lloyd Bailey, Jimmy Earl Bailey.

Survived by daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Danny Wilkins, granddaughters Emily Wilkins, Amy Wilkins all of Defuniak Springs, FL; four brothers and sisters-in-law Hayward and Charlotte Bailey of Slocomb, AL, James and Judy Bailey of Graceville, Bobby and Linda Bailey of Hartford, AL, Donnie and Faye Bailey of Slocomb, AL; sister-in-law Peggy Bailey of Columbus, GA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Max and Corrine Clark of Crestview, special friend Shirley Cassidy of Graceville; and a host nieces and nephews.

Wayne Trefz, Jr, age 85, passed away on Friday, January 14, 2011 in Sarasota, FL. Before his retirement, he was employed with Malloy’s Gladiolus Farm.

Allie Mae Rister, age 76, passed away on Friday, January 14, 2011 in Jackson Hospital. She was a member of New Salem Baptist Church and resided in the Kynesville Community since 1976 having moved there from Graceville. Mrs. Rister enjoyed playing with her grandchildren, talking on the phone to friends and family and making sure her nails and jewelry were in good order. Her heart was full of Jesus and reading the bible was important in her daily walk with him.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earnest and Effie Kelly Miles; brother, Valery Miles; and sister, Alfie Mae Monds and brother-in-law Leon Monds.

Survivors include her devoted husband, Gene Rister of Marianna; son, Bobby Joe Huddleston and wife Anne of Cranberry Township, PA; daughter, Judy Elrod and husband Tony of Lakeland, FL; brother, Mike Miles and wife, Bonnie Miles of Dothan, AL; sisters Eliza Cobb of Lakeland, Fl and Mary Lois Bradley of Prattville,AL; sister in law Luvern Miles of Chipley; five grandchildren, Timi – Lynn Huffman, Ramsey Joe and Jesse Dean Huddleston, Gene and Amber Elrod and Alisha and Alvin Rupp; great-grandchildren Zachary Huddleston, Morgan and Alle Rupp and soon to be Paisley Elrod; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services were held on Monday, January 17, 2011 and 11:00 A.M. at the Marianna Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Glenn Dunham and Rev. Donnie Peacock officiating. Interment followed in New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.

Jack Austin Budd, age 71, of Compass Lake passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2011 in Southeast Alabama Medical Center. He had been a resident of Jackson County for 16 years having located here from Fayetteville, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jack P. and Marjorie O. Budd.

Survivors include his wife, Sheila Budd of Compass Lake; daughter, Lindsay Prickett and husband Brandon of Donalsonville, Ga.; sister, Carol Young of Fayetteville, Ark; a host of nieces and nephews and all of his loving pets.

Mr. Budds family held a private service at a later date.

Karl Sinclair Franz, M.D.

Karl Sinclair Franz, M.D. age 65, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 16, 2011 at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

Karl Sinclair Franz, M.D., son of Aleene Sinclair Franz and Karl Herman Franz, M.D., graduated from Chipley High School with the class of 1963. He attended Chipola Junior College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Miami in 1968. He then obtained a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Florida in 1972. Following this he completed his internship and residency in general surgery at Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1977.

Dr. Franz practiced General Surgery and Primary Care in Marianna, Florida from 1977 until 2003. While there he was chief of surgery, chief of medical staff, a member of Jackson Hospital Board of Trustee for two terms and a past Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Dr. Franz is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Florida Medical Association, past member of the Panhandle Medical Society and most recently a member of the Capital Medical Society in Tallahassee, Florida.

He moved to Tallahassee in 2003. Dr. Franz has spent his time as senior medical advisor for the Agency of Health Care Administration for Medicaid. He was also involved in coastal development and other real estate ventures. He enjoyed travel, hunting, fishing, training hunting dogs, and spending time with family. He was an active member of the St. Andrew Society and Chirurgeon in Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem. He was a life member of Ducks Unlimited and the National Rifle Association. He is a member of First Presbyterian Church in Marianna, Florida.

He is survived by his wife, Angela Pettis Franz, and his children: Alexander Sinclair Franz, M.D.; Aaron Joseph Franz, CPA; Adam Clayton Franz, USAF; Andrew Everett Franz, Jeffrey Jason McCall, and Meagan Elizabeth Munsee, three grandchildren: Derek Tyeson Franz, Sinclair Ellen Franz and Asher Claxton Franz, and his sister Corrine Ishler and brother Cornell Franz.

Sinclair was the quintessential “Small Town Doctor.” When he came to Marianna in 1977 he was a well-trained General Surgeon. He may have seen you on Monday for a broken arm and delivered your first child on Tuesday. He believed in knowing and living life along with his patients. Medicine was only a tool to give to others.

His father was a doctor in West Africa during World War II. He was a doctor and now the legacy lives on with his son, Alex.

He lived a full life with many interests, but his greatest love was his family. He was so proud of his sons’ and daughter. He installed in all of them importance to live up to their potential and always be kind to others. He encouraged his family to embrace other cultures and ideas, to pursue knowledge and keep an open mind. He now leaves behind a doctor, lawyer, accountant, agriculturist, geologist, and culinary specialist – his proudest achievements – and the love of his life – Angela.

Services for Dr. Franz were held on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church of Marianna with Dr. Huw Christopher officiating.

A time of remembrance was held on Wednesday January 19, 2011 from 6 to 8 P.M. at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home.

Robert Lloyd Garbe age 55 of Marianna passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2011 in Jackson Hospital. He had lived in Marianna for the last two years coming here from Palm Harbor, Fl. He was of the Catholic faith and enjoyed boating and deep sea fishing. Mr. Garbe had been the grounds supervisor and was in charge of the crematory Curlew Memory Gardens in Palm Harbor.

Survivors include three sisters, Joan Ford of Moorestown, N.J., Margaret “Margie” Mullins and Kathryn McKeon both of Marianna. Services for Mr. Garbe were held at a later date in New Jersey.

Sara Frances Greer Mitchell

Sara Frances Greer Mitchell, 83, of Marianna went to be with the LORD, January 5, 2011 at the Medical Center in Dothan, Alabama.

She was born on August 19, 1927 in Rose Hill, Alabama to Frank and Ada Greer. Sara was a Marianna High School graduate and married Judson Ryles Mitchell on June 30, 1949. She was a housewife and kept Judson’s business opened when he had to make service calls as a television repairman. Sara, known as Nanu, was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

NaNu delighted in her two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Nanu attended every function in which each one participated. She loved spending time at her beach and mountain homes. Her favorite hobby was fishing and visiting casinos.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Ada Greer, and both her sister and brother-in-law, Guy and Mary Jo Moody; her son-in-law, Rodney Russ.

Nanu is survived by her husband, Judson Mitchell; daughter, Sarieta Russ; granddaughter, Alanna Russ; grandson, Mitchell Russ; and great-granddaughter, Maggie Russ-Baxley; a host of niece’s and nephews; special extended family, Kisha Basford and Janet Young.

Dorothy Mae Davis, age 78, of Chipley, passed away at her home on Monday, January 3, 2011.

She was born on June 10, 1932 in Sumter, SC to the late Fredrick Carter and Ada Ruth Dykes. Mrs. Davis is formerly of Panama City where she was a member of the Springfield Community Church. She was a person of great compassion who loved her family dearly and enjoyed going out to dinner.

She was preceded in death by her husband; Henry William Davis, her father; Fredrick Carter, her mother; Ada Ruth Dykes and her step father; Lonnie Dykes

Steve Allen Hawes, Sr., age 58, of Marianna passed away on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Al. He was an evangelist, ministering at many places in the United States and in the prison system. Steve loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking. He was always willing to help his fellowman, loved a practical joke and will be sincerely missed.

Survivors include his loving wife, Judy Hawes of Marianna, mother, Ruby Laura McGlee of Marianna; three sons, Steve Allen Hawes, Jr. of Marianna, Travis Hawes and wife, Geneiveve of Laughlin, NV and Eric Hawes of Goldenvallie, AZ; step children S. David Morgan and wife Jen of Frisco, Tx and Phillip Morgan and wife Ashley of LaFayette, LA, brother; Wallace (Mike) Hawes and wife Cathleen of Marianna; nephew, Michael Hawes and wife Dusty of West Virginia and great nephew, Caleb; adopted sister; Evelyn Burgman and husband Kenneth of Emory, TX; grandchildren, Ainsley, Kevin, Amelia, Steve, Ashley, Annabelle and Audrey.

Services for Mr. Hawes were held on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 5 P.M. at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Wallace Hawes officiating. Visitation was held from 3 P.M. until service time.

Mrs. Kimerly Diane Hixson, age 49, of Cottondale, passed away at her home on Monday, January 03, 2011.

She was born on January 11, 1961 in Nashville, TN to the late Charles J. Smith and her mother Jane Sawyer. Mrs. Hixson was of the Baptist faith and had lived in Cottondale for the past sixteen years. She was loved by her family and was a friend to many. Some of her true loves were chocolate and her cowboy boots.

Mrs. Hixson was preceded in death by her father; Charles J. Smith and her grandmother; Bernice Moore. She was survived by her mother; Jane Sawyer of Sneads, her husband; Jeff Hixson of Cottondale, two daughters; Kristi Neal and husband Brian of Sneads, Nikki Merritt of Marianna, two sisters; Denise Hixson and Becky Hardbower both of Marianna, five grandchildren; Austin Merritt, Logan Carter, Hunter Neal, Gage Neal and Rhett Neal, four nephews; Scott Hixson, Randal Hardbower, Stephen Hardbower and Daniel Hardbower.

Services for Mrs. Hixson were held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 5, 2011 in the Marianna Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Rentz officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.

A time of remembrance was held from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 4, 2010 in the Marianna Chapel Funeral Home.

Mrs. Margaret J. Johnson, of Dothan, Alabama, formerly of Graceville, FL, retired District 2 Representative of the Dothan City School Board, and widower of the late, Reverend Rochester Johnson formerly of Marianna, FL, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday afternoon, January 01, 2011 at the Campbellton-Graceville Hospital in Graceville, Florida, with her loving and devoted family at her bedside. She was 63.

Visitation was Thursday, January 6th, 5-7 P.M. at the North Highland Missionary Baptist Church, 407 Houston Street, Dothan, AL.

Funeral services was held Friday, January 7th, 1:00 P.M., at the Northview Christian Church-The Dome, 200 Dome Lane, Dothan, Alabama with the Reverend Brandon K. Marshall and Presiding Prelate Bishop A. J. Richardson officiating. She was laid to rest in the Gates of Heaven Cemetery, Dothan under the directions of Christian Memorial Chapel of Graceville, Florida.

Mr. Willie Kirkland of Chipley, Florida and formerly of Campbellton, Florida went home to be with the Lord on Thursday December 30th in the Washington County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Chipley. He was 79.

Visitation was Friday, January 7th 4-7 P.M., at the M. Sue and Rodney D. Pittman Memorial Chapel, 5441 Cooper Street, Graceville, FL.

Judith Elaine Williams, 66, of Marianna, died Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at her residence.

She was born in La Fayette, Alabama, lived most of her life in this area. She was a member of Altha Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Eugene Williams; her parents, Pat and Mae Johnson of Columbus, GA.; four brothers, Jerry Lee Johnson, Richard Lumas Johnson, Anthony Johnson and Randall Troy Johnson; one sister, Genny Williams.

Survivors include four sons, Gary Williams and wife, Kim of Marianna, David Williams of Altha, Mike Williams and wife, Christian of Marianna, Richard Williams and wife, Belinda of Panama City; one brother, William (Billy) Johnson; one sister, Brenda Johnson; 11grandchildren, four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, December 31, 2010 at Altha Church of God with Rev. Allen Nichols officiating. Interment was in Sink Creek Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

Clayton “Clay” Frank Hagan, 47 of Panama City Beach formerly of Graceville passed away Thursday, December 30, 2010, from injuries received in a motorcycle accident.

Graveside service was held Monday, January 3, 2011, at Marvin Chapel Cemetery with Dr. Jerry Windsor and Rev. Tim Folds officiating, James & Lipford Funeral Home in Graceville directing. Family received friends at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on Monday.

Clay was born in Graceville on November 30, 1963 to John Frank and Betty Grant Hagan. He was a 1981 graduate of Graceville High School and member of the First Baptist Church of Graceville. Clay worked as a social worker with the State of Florida Department of Children and Families. He was an avid Florida fan (Go Gators!), avid golfer and a friend to all.

Preceded in death by his father and sister Flossie Bedsole.

He is survived by his beloved mother Betty Hagan, brother Charlie Bedsole and wife Julie of Tuscaloosa, AL, nieces and nephews Andrea and fiance’ James, Leigh, Blake and Brett; special aunt and uncle Ellene and John Vance and several other aunts, uncles and cousins; special friend Caron Harris and her children Beth Lawrence, Barry Harris.

Mr. Cato was a veteran of the Georgia National Guard.
